Full Job Description

As a Combat Systems Analysis Engineer, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. Babcock submarine support engineering mission systems within naval nuclear is focussed on support to the Royal Navy's in-service combat and strategic systems, trusted to deliver and sustain the fight function to ensure mission ready ships and submarines.

Day-to-day, you'll support the processing of defect reporting, highlight underperforming equipment and provide recommendations to improve capability and availability

  • Draft and release S2022(A) reports

  • Process defect reports (known as S2022(S)) and work with the Design Authority to provide suitable responses to ships staff recommendations and remarks.

  • Work with the Design Authority to close any follow-on actions that are raised as part of the S2022(S) process.

  • Support the management of concessions (deviation from design intent) close-out by proposing maintenance periods suitable to conduct work and, when agreed, enter work packages into the Rolling Design Authority Requirement (RDAR).

  • Evaluate combat system equipment defect data to determine the underperforming equipment areas and produce reports and presentations summarising findings.


  • This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with two to three days in the office/onsite and two to three days working from home.

    Essential experience of the Combat Systems Analysis Engineer
  • Experience of submarines from an operational engineering perspective

  • Experience of defect reporting within the MOD, Operational Deficiencies (OPDEFS), S2022(A), S2022(S), Concessions, UMMS etc.

  • Experience of working in a regulated industry with a wide and diverse stakeholder group.

  • A background in naval architecture, marine, mechanical, electrical engineering or other Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related backgrounds.

  • An effective problem solver - being able to balance theoretical assessments with pragmatic solutions.


  • Qualifications for the Combat Systems Analysis Engineer
  • Degree qualified in a relevant STEM-based discipline or HND, Foundation Degree with relevant experience.

  • Member of relevant professional engineering body.


  • Security Clearance
