Full Job Description

We are investing heavily across our Technology and Digital domains, and to accelerate achieving our vision, we are seeking an experienced Head of Connect Engineering to join Digital Channels. This is a global role and can be based in UK (London), India or China, with occasional travel required.

The Head of Connect Engineering is accountable to the Global Head of Connect for end-to-end execution and delivery of the HSBC Connect service to our clients, including change programmes, technology programmes and production services.

The role will support our multi-year architecture, technology, people, and process changes while ensuring delivery to our business partners' requirements. Pivotal to this will be modernising our technology, redefining our ways of working; diminishing engineering friction and creating enabled and autonomous teams that can deliver functions front-to-back.

Job Requirements:

  • Drive activities to support Engineering Transformation under our Future Fit programme to include:

  • + E2E automation Workflow (CI/CD)
    + Fully Automated Functional Integration test
    + Observability and Alerting
    + Reusability of Assets within Wholesale Digital (including our API estate)
  • Provide technical leadership across the end-to-end delivery and run lifecycle, utilising their skills and expertise to carry out software development, testing and operational support activities typically being deployed to resolve the most challenging and/or impactful projects or deliveries

  • End to end accountability for a product or service, identifying and developing the most appropriate Technology solutions to meet customer needs as part of the Customer Journey

  • Liaise with other engineers, architects, and business stakeholders to understand and drive the product or service's direction.

  • Establish a digital environment and automate processes to minimize variation and ensure predictable high quality code and data.

  • Create technical test strategies, plans and records, including unit and integration tests, within automated test environments to ensure code quality.

  • Provide support to DevOps teams working at all stages of a product or service release/change with a strong customer focus and end to end journeys, ensuring they have an excellent domain knowledge.

  • Working with Ops, Dev and Test Engineers to ensure operational issues (performance, operator intervention, alerting, design defect related issues, etc.) are identified and addressed at all stages of a product or service release / change.

  • Ensure service resilience, service sustainability and recovery time objectives are met for all the software solutions delivered.

  • Responsible for automating the continuous integration / continuous delivery pipeline within a DevOps Product/Service team driving a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Keep up to date and have expertise on current tools, technologies and areas like cyber security and regulations pertaining to aspects like data privacy, consent, data residency etc. that are applicable

  • Work with industry groups/peers and vendors outside of HSBC to establish and maintain HSBC's involvement and influence in the engineering space.

  • Promote innovation and adoption of cutting edge specialist technologies and practices with the domain and across HSBC.

  • Work with the Engineering Practice to promote development of engineers through coaching, and mentoring.

    "Hands on" engineering background (10-15 years) with experience in an individual contributor engineering role (as opposed to a people manager with experience in engineering teams)

  • Proven track record in maintaining latest technical skills - Kafka, AWS, GCP, Java, Microservices, Containerisation.

  • Experience in working Agile environment with a strong focus on developing engineering solutions

  • Proven ability to improve developer productivity - through automation and advanced technical skills

  • Strong leadership skills, team-builder and influencer

  • Exposure and success working within a global matrix organization model

  • Proven track record in effective stakeholder management

  • Gravitas and ability to interact with and advise senior executives

  • Ability to think laterally and innovatively and find creative solutions, with a proactive approach to problem solving and delivery

  • Ability to understand business issues and devise solutions that deliver results, constructing fresh approaches where appropriate and making connections to other issues

  • Able to work within an ambiguous environment, prioritize and reconcile competing demands and resolve complex issues

  • Great attention to detail and an ability to identify and manage risk

  • Highly experienced in getting the best out of people at various levels


  • This role is based in Sheffield, also open across the UK and will include travel.
