Full Job Description

The British Transport Police Authority (BTPA/the Authority") is the independent oversight body of the British Transport Police (BTP/the Force"). We are an Executive Non-Departmental Public Body sponsored by the Department for Transport.

BTPA was formally established under the Railways and Transport Safety Act 2003 and is the independent body responsible for ensuring an efficient and effective police force for rail operators, their staff and passengers. Its duties and functions are similar to those of the Scottish Police Authority or a Police and Crime Commissioner in England and Wales, but it oversees a force that is responsible for policing a much wider area - the railways of Great Britain.

Role Purpose

We have an opportunity for a dedicated and motivated team player to join BTPA as Head of Office to the Chief Executive. This is a varied role which will work closely and collaboratively with other Members of the BTPA Executive, BTPA Members, with the Force as well as government departments and other policing and public sector bodies.

This role will suit individuals who are comfortable working flexibly and at pace, supporting the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team to deliver their priorities - ensuring these are understood and translated into actions.

Liaises with:

  • The BTPA Executive Team and BTPA Members.

  • Senior central government officials/DfT sponsorship team.

  • IOPC / PIRC / Home Office / ICO.

  • MOPAC / PCCs / APCC / APACE / College of Policing.

  • Non-Home Office force equivalents.

  • Chief Officers, heads of department and colleagues within the BTP.

  • Staff associations including BTP Federation, Superintendent's Association and TSSA.

  • Partners such as lawyers, press colleagues and other advisors.

    1. We are looking for a motivated individual with excellent organisational skills including the ability to reprioritise at short notice and deliver at pace.

  • 2. You will have a high level of drive and flexibility with a strong sense of ownership and accountability along with the ability to work autonomously and with discretion.
    3. You will need the ability to deliver calmly under pressure, manage multiple and competing priorities, anticipate and interpret the views of the Chief Executive in order to engage, support and inform decision-making.
    4. You will need to be good at building relationships and working as part of a team, including effectively escalating issues and updating colleagues on developments, with a proven ability to cut through complex and time sensitive issues.
    5. You will have the enthusiasm to work both individually and as part of a team, including the ability to stimulate thinking and actions in others.
    6. You are likely to have strong communication skills both written and verbally with strong presentation and drafting skills, including the ability to present information and data in a clear, concise and logical way, to varying levels of seniority.
    7. You will be used to looking ahead, actively considering potential risks and mitigations and adept at difficult and sensitive handling.

    Desirable
    1. Experience / understanding of rail sector or police service and/or an oversight or regulatory body within the public sector.
    2. Experience in a Head of Office / Chief of Staff / Private Secretary role., The evidence should be specific and focused on your personal involvement, experience, actions and the resultant outcome.

    British Transport Police is unique. We are a national police force, working closely with the rail industry to ensure the safety and security of nearly 3 billion passenger journeys and over 100 million tons of freight every year across the rail network throughout Great Britain, including London Underground. The world in which we work is fast-paced, operationally and commercially demanding, and constantly changing.

    Our job is to keep the travelling public and people who work on the railway safe from harm. Our aim is to ensure people get home safe, secure and on time every day. It's a massive task. And it demands huge amounts of talent and determination to succeed.

    This post is offered on a full-time permanent basis. However, a secondment for a minimum of two years would be considered.

    The post is graded as B04 and the salary is on a six-point scale from £50,674.42 rising to £58,195.96.

    Allowances (in addition if London based):
  • London Weighting Allowance of £3033.56 per annum.
