Full Job Description

LSAC is looking for a highly motivated individual with plenty of knowledge and experience of instructing Outdoor Activities to join our team of Instructors at Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre in delivering a wide-ranging high quality activity programme, and to help expand our service.

Using your experience and qualifications you will help develop and promote Outdoor Activities at LSAC, whilst ensuring good customer satisfaction, maintaining health and safety standards, and provide a quality service to the highest standards.

This role is for a various part time post but will include some evenings and weekend working., To deliver a safe and high-quality Outdoor Activity Programme for all ages and abilities at LSAC.

To develop and promote the programme of Outdoor Activities at LSAC working in conjunction with the Centre Manager.

To undertake equipment maintenance, and maintain the centres upkeep and appearance.

Maintain a good and positive image of the City Council to customers and the public generally by providing a welcoming, helpful and professional service.

Responsibilities for Grade:

To a range of high quality and safe coaching sessions that are accessible to all. To work with the Centre Manager to organise, manage, and promote a range of high quality and safe coaching sessions, on and offsite, that are accessible to all.

To deliver sessions in a professional manner in accordance with the City Council and National Governing Body Codes of Conduct.

To support the identification and progression of talented young people and encourage further development into local exit routes.

To take positive steps to identify and overcome barriers to participation amongst young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

To undertake administrative tasks in connection with programmes of work. i.e., Registers, monitoring and evaluation forms, risk assessments etc.

To undertake training and continuous professional development as necessary to the post and further career advancement e.g., Sheltered Water Coach/Performance Coach, RYA Dinghy Instructor/SI, mentoring, tutor training, Manual Handling, Health and Safety Awareness, etc..

To assist in establishing and coaching new junior clubs/sections after school or in the community.

To report to and liaise with nominated officers, facilities, and other parties as directed and appropriate.

To mentor support staff, volunteers where appropriate.

To establish an effective working relationship with schools, colleges, clubs, West Yorkshire Sport and Leeds City Council.

To identify new programme developments for LSAC.

To visit and promote LSAC within schools, colleges and at external events.

To undertake key holding responsibility to open and close the building.

To undertake the accountabilities of the post in accordance with council policies including the Equal Opportunities, Child Protection Policies, and Health & Safety Policies.

To undertake any other duties which may be assigned from time to time, as directed by the line manager which may be reasonably required of you, that are commensurate with the grade of the post and your level of responsibility.

Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre (LSAC) is looking for highly motivated individuals with experience of Instructing and Delivering a wide range of Outdoor Activities to join our team of Instructors at LSAC to help expand our service.

As an Outdoor Activity Instructor, you will bring to the role:

  • RYA Dinghy Sailing Instructor or RYA Start Windsurf Instructor, or higher

  • BC Paddlesport Instructor OR BC Paddlesport Leadership Award, or higher; or an LSAC Statement of Competence for paddlesport

  • First Aid Qualification

  • A wide range of experience and knowledge of outdoor activities along with any additional qualifications that will be of benefit to the position, A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be carried out on preferred candidates. Read our recruitment of ex-offenders policy., Essential:


  • First Aid qualification.

    Plus Either:

    RYA Dinghy or Start Windsurf Instructor

    OR

    BC Paddlesport Instructor, BC Paddlesport Leadership Award, or LSAC Statement of Competence

    PERSON SPECIFICATION: Method of Assessment will be through one or more of the following Application Form, Test, Interview, and Certificate

    ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: It is essential that the Candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post within the context of the specific role duties and responsibilities: Candidates will only be shortlisted for interview if they can demonstrate on the application form that they meet all the essential requirements

    Good interpersonal and presentation skills.

    Good numeracy and literacy skills.

    Able to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, organisations, clubs, schools and other agencies.

    Able to adapt to the needs of individuals and different work situations.

    Able to work flexibly as part of a team with minimal supervision and able to work on own initiative.

    Able to demonstrate good organisational skills.

    Able to evaluate lesson planning and implement to deliver good outdoor activity lessons.

    Ability to work with user groups who may have Special Needs.

    Candidates must have one of the Essential qualifications below:

    RYA Dinghy/Start Windsurf Instructor or higher

    OR

    BC Paddlesport Instructor, Bell Boat Helm, Paddlesport Leader Award, LSAC Statement of Competence, or higher

    Demonstrate coaching qualifications in a wide range of outdoor pursuits activities.

    Knowledge of the National and Local Structures and development initiatives in Outdoor Activities.

    Knowledge of Risk Assessments, Health and Safety Guidelines, Child Protection and Welfare Issues.

    To have or be willing to gain further qualifications.

    Experience instructing a wide range of Outdoor Activities and general experience in delivering to a wide range of client groups, and of safe working practices.

    Experience of collating records and paperwork.

    Experience of planning and co-ordinating coaching sessions at a variety of levels.

    Experience undertaking and recording equipment management, safety, and maintenance of equipment.

    Experience of Administrative tasks.

    Experience of supervising and motivating groups of mixed age and ability.

    Able to evaluate sessions, accurately assessing/recording and evaluating of participant(s) progress using the appropriate resources provided, and provide/record quality feedback to participants.
